Description

The Rwandan lesion nematode (Pratylenchus rwandae) is a microscopic plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. This pest is a serious threat to agriculture due to its ability to inhabit both the soil and the internal tissues of host roots. As an endoparasite, it causes significant physiological stress to crops, limiting nutrient and water uptake.

A wide range of crops is susceptible to Pratylenchus rwandae, with particular damage noted in tubers, root vegetables, and certain field crops. The pest's ability to survive in diverse soil conditions makes it a persistent issue for growers. It is particularly damaging in regions where intensive agriculture is practiced, allowing the nematode population to build up over successive seasons.

The biology of this nematode is centered on its migratory lifestyle. Both juvenile and adult stages invade the root cortex. The resulting damage to the root system makes the plant highly susceptible to drought and nutritional deficiencies, significantly reducing overall yield quality and quantity.
