Sudan lesion nematode

Systematic position. The Sudan lesion nematode Pratylenchus sudanensis belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Tylenchida, and the family Pratylenchidae. It is a microscopic, soil-borne plant-parasitic organism that acts as an endoparasite, invading the root tissues of host plants to feed and reproduce.

Host range. This nematode has a broad host range, posing a significant threat to various agricultural crops. Major host plants include cereals such as wheat, barley, and maize. Furthermore, it often parasitizes various pulses and vegetable crops, hindering their ability to effectively absorb water and essential nutrients from the soil.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, four juvenile stages, and the adult stage. Unlike sedentary nematodes, Pratylenchus sudanensis is a migratory endoparasite, meaning it continuously moves within the root cortex. It spends parts of its life cycle both within the root tissues and in the surrounding soil, allowing it to survive during unfavorable environmental conditions.

Damage and severity. The feeding activity of these nematodes results in characteristic brown necrotic lesions on roots. As the infection progresses, the root system becomes damaged, leading to stunted growth, nutrient deficiency symptoms (such as chlorosis), and reduced plant vigor. High levels of infestation cause substantial yield losses and can weaken plants, making them more susceptible to secondary soil-borne pathogens.

Protection measures. Managing Pratylenchus sudanensis requires a multifaceted approach due to its elusive nature inside roots. Effective control strategies include:

• Implementing diverse crop rotations with non-host or trap crops.
• Application of certified clean seed and resistant cultivars where available.
• Proper soil management to maintain plant vigor and root health.
• Targeted use of soil nematicides or fumigants in high-pressure scenarios to reduce initial population density.
