Pratylenchus teres is a plant-parasitic nematode species belonging to the Pratylenchidae family and the order Tylenchida. As an obligate migratory endoparasite, this pest primarily inhabits soil and plant root tissues, causing significant damage to the host's physiological functions and root architecture.
This nematode has a relatively broad host range, primarily affecting cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and oats. It can also infest various grasses and wild plants, which act as alternate hosts and reservoirs, ensuring the nematode's survival in the field throughout the rotation cycle.
The life cycle involves eggs, four juvenile stages, and adults. Both juveniles and adults act as infective stages, actively penetrating the roots and migrating through the cortical parenchyma. During this movement, they rupture cells, causing physical damage and facilitating the entry of secondary pathogenic fungi and bacteria into the root system.
The damage caused by Pratylenchus teres is characterized by necrotic lesions, which eventually merge, leading to the decay of root tissues. Infected plants often show symptoms of stunting, chlorosis, and reduced water and nutrient uptake. This physiological stress severely impacts the crop's vitality, resulting in significant yield losses and lower product quality.
Control strategies should focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Key measures include rotating susceptible crops with non-host plants to break the nematode life cycle, effective weed control to remove reservoirs, and the application of chemical nematicides when infestation levels exceed economic thresholds.
