Description
Pratylenchus thornei is a migratory endoparasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. This soil-borne pathogen is recognized globally as a significant threat to agricultural productivity, causing extensive root damage through its feeding behavior.
The nematode has a wide host range, primarily affecting cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and oats. In addition to cereals, it frequently infects legumes like chickpeas, lentils, and various vegetable crops, making it a difficult pest to manage in diverse cropping systems where suitable hosts are always present.
The life cycle of this organism involves both juvenile and adult stages, all of which are capable of infesting root tissues. As they move within the root cortex, they consume cells, creating lesions that facilitate secondary infections by soil-borne fungal pathogens, thereby exacerbating the overall damage to the plant.
