Description

The Andean potato weevil, belonging to the genus Premnotrypes, is one of the most destructive agricultural pests affecting potato production in the high-altitude regions of the Andes. These insects are classified as significant economic threats because they directly attack the tubers, which form the primary harvestable product.

Taxonomically, the genus Premnotrypes belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These weevils have evolved specific physiological mechanisms to survive in cool, high-elevation environments, making them highly successful in their native ecological niches.

The life cycle of the weevil is synchronized with the potato growing season. Adult beetles emerge from the soil to mate and feed on foliage. However, the most severe damage is caused by the larvae, which bore into the developing tubers to feed. The entire larval stage takes place within the tuber, where they complete their development before exiting to pupate in the soil.

Regarding crop damage, the presence of the Andean potato weevil leads to internal tunnel formation in tubers. This feeding damage significantly reduces the yield quality and quantity. Furthermore, the tunnels created by the larvae serve as entry points for rot-causing bacteria and fungi, often resulting in complete crop loss during post-harvest storage.
