Description
The Andean potato weevil (Premnotrypes fractirostris) is a severe insect pest primarily affecting potato crops in the Andean highlands. It belongs to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. Due to its potential to cause total crop failure, it is classified as a significant quarantine pest in numerous agricultural jurisdictions worldwide.
The host range of this pest is centered on Solanaceous plants, with a strong preference for potato (Solanum tuberosum). While adult beetles feed on leaf margins, the larvae are the most destructive stage. They penetrate the tubers, feeding internally and creating extensive galleries that compromise the tuber's integrity and quality.
The biological cycle consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Female weevils typically oviposit near the host plant. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the tubers.
