Andean potato weevil

The Andean potato weevil (Premnotrypes latithorax) is a destructive pest of potatoes primarily found in the high-altitude regions of the Andes. Belonging to the family Curculionidae, this beetle poses a critical threat to potato production, causing significant economic losses to farmers in South American highland farming systems.

From a systematic point of view, it is classified under the order Coleoptera. The species is highly specialized for cold mountain climates. Its morphology allows it to thrive where other potato pests might struggle, making it a persistent challenge for agricultural managers operating in mountainous terrain.

The life cycle of the weevil is complex and involves both soil-dwelling and plant-parasitic stages. Adults feed on foliage, but the most severe damage is caused by the larval stage. Beyond the physical destruction of the tuber tissue, these galleries create entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, which significantly accelerate the rotting process of the harvest in storage facilities.
