Description
Systematic position. The Andean potato weevil (Premnotrypes piercei) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, specifically impacting potato production in regions where it is established.
Host plants and damage symptoms. The primary host is the potato plant. Adult weevils feed on the leaf margins, causing minor damage. However, the larvae are highly destructive, boring deep galleries into the potato tubers. This larval feeding creates tunnels, which reduces the market value and makes the tubers prone to rapid rot and decay.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females typically lay eggs in the soil near the base of the plant or on plant debris. Once hatched, the larvae migrate into the soil to locate and penetrate young tubers. After completing their development inside the tuber, they move back into the soil to pupate and eventually emerge as adults.
Economic importance. This pest is a major threat, capable of causing yield losses exceeding 50% under heavy infestations. The presence of larvae inside tubers not only directly affects the yield but also compromises the ability of the crop to be stored, leading to significant post-harvest losses if not properly managed.
Management measures. Controlling the Andean potato weevil requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
- Strict adherence to quarantine regulations to limit geographical spread.
- Use of certified, weevil-free potato seeds.
- Rotation of crops to disrupt the life cycle of the pest.
- Application of soil-incorporated insecticides at planting.
- Physical removal and destruction of infested tubers during harvest and sorting.
