Andean potato weevil

Premnotrypes solani

Description

Systematic position: The Andean potato weevil (Premnotrypes solani) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a highly destructive quarantine pest native to the high-altitude regions of the Andes, capable of causing significant economic damage to potato production worldwide if introduced into suitable climates.

Affected crops: This pest primarily targets the potato plant (Solanum tuberosum). While adult beetles feed on the foliage of the plant, the larvae are the primary stage causing damage. They specifically attack the tubers, burrowing into the flesh and rendering the harvest unsuitable for commercial use or consumption.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle begins when adult females lay eggs in the soil or near the base of the potato plant. Once hatched, the larvae migrate into the soil to find tubers. They spend their larval stage inside the tuber, feeding and growing. After reaching maturity, they exit the tuber and pupate in the soil, often undergoing diapause to survive unfavorable conditions.

Damage and economic impact: Damage is manifested by internal tunnels created by larvae, which are often accompanied by external entry holes. These galleries significantly reduce tuber weight and degrade quality. Furthermore, the feeding tunnels create entry points for soil-borne pathogens and bacteria, leading to the rapid rotting of infected tubers, causing major losses during storage.

Control measures: Management of the Andean potato weevil relies heavily on prevention and integrated pest management (IPM):

  • Strict quarantine regulations to prevent the movement of infested tubers.
  • Utilization of clean, certified seed potatoes free from larvae or eggs.
  • Crop rotation cycles that exclude solanaceous crops for several years to starve the population.
  • Application of soil insecticides during planting to protect the developing tubers.
  • Mechanical soil cultivation to disrupt the pupation sites and reduce overwintering survival.
