The Andean potato weevil (Premnotrypes solaniperda) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a major threat to potato cultivation, particularly in the Andean regions, acting as a quarantine pest in many parts of the world due to its destructive potential on potato tubers.
This weevil exclusively targets potato crops. While adult beetles feed on the margins of potato leaves, causing minor defoliation, the primary economic damage is inflicted by the larvae. Once hatched, the larvae migrate into the soil, locate potato tubers, and burrow inside to feed on the inner tissue.
The biological cycle of this insect is synchronized with the potato growing season. Adult weevils are nocturnal and flightless in some species, hiding in the soil or under debris during the day. After mating, females deposit eggs near the base of the plant. The larvae then drop to the ground and tunnel into the tubers, where they complete their development before pupating in the soil.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Farmers are encouraged to use certified, pest-free seed tubers and practice crop rotation to disrupt the life cycle of the weevil. Soil cultivation can help expose pupae to predators and desiccation. Furthermore, the application of targeted insecticides during the period when adult weevils emerge from the soil is essential for controlling population outbreaks.
