Description

The Andean potato weevil (Premnotrypes solanivorax) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as one of the most significant threats to potato production in the Andean region and beyond.

This beetle primarily attacks potato crops. Both adult insects and larvae feed on the plant, but the larvae are the most destructive stage, causing extensive damage to the tubers, which constitutes the main part of the economic yield.

The life cycle begins when females lay eggs near the base of the potato plants. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the tubers to feed. After completing their development inside the potato, they emerge to pupate in the soil, completing the cycle in a few months depending on environmental conditions.

The damage is characterized by intricate tunnels made by larvae, which lead to significant weight loss in the tubers and make them vulnerable to opportunistic fungal and bacterial pathogens. Often, potatoes look normal on the outside but are heavily damaged internally, leading to post-harvest losses.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for control. These include using certified pest-free seed potatoes, crop rotation to break the pest's cycle, and applying soil-applied insecticides. Mechanical control, such as deep plowing and destroying crop residues, is also recommended to reduce population density.
