Andean potato weevil

Premnotrypes suturicallus

Description

The Andean potato weevil (Premnotrypes suturicallus) is a significant coleopteran pest belonging to the family Curculionidae. It is native to the Andean highlands, where it is recognized as a major limiting factor in potato production. Its cryptic behavior makes it a challenging subject for integrated pest management programs.

This pest primarily infests potato plants (Solanum tuberosum). While it shows a strong preference for cultivated potato varieties, it can also utilize various wild Solanum species as alternative hosts. The ability to persist in diverse environmental conditions allows it to maintain populations even in areas with varied agricultural practices.

The lifecycle consists of several distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult females lay eggs in the soil near the base of the plant. Once hatched, the larvae penetrate the developing tubers and tunnel into the flesh. After completing their larval development, they exit the tubers and move back into the soil to pupate, emerging later as adults to repeat the cycle.

The damage caused by Premnotrypes suturicallus is characterized by deep, winding tunnels within the potato tubers. This destruction renders the potatoes unfit for consumption or market sale. Furthermore, these tunnels facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, such as bacteria and fungi, which cause internal rot and significantly reduce the shelf life of the harvested crop.

Effective management strategies require a multi-faceted approach to reduce pest pressure and prevent population buildup:

  • Implementation of strict crop rotation cycles to disrupt the pest's life cycle.
  • Application of granular insecticides into the soil during the planting phase.
  • Use of pheromone-based traps to monitor and control adult populations.
  • Rigorous sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infested tubers and debris after harvest.
