Description

The Andean potato weevil (Premnotrypes vorax) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is considered one of the primary constraints to potato production in the high-altitude regions of the Andean highlands.

The species feeds primarily on potatoes. While adults may feed on leaves, the larval stage is responsible for the most significant economic damage. Larvae bore into tubers, creating deep tunnels that compromise the structure and marketability of the harvested potatoes.

The life cycle encompasses four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid in the soil or on tuber surfaces. Once hatched, larvae penetrate the tuber to feed. Upon maturity, they exit the tuber to pupate in the surrounding soil at varying depths.

Damage assessment reveals galleries and tunnels within the tubers, often filled with larval frass. These injuries not only reduce yield weight but also act as entry points for secondary pathogens, such as bacteria and fungi, leading to severe decay during storage.

Control strategies must be integrated, combining cultural practices such as crop rotation, deep plowing to expose pupae to predators, and the targeted use of systemic insecticides. Strict quarantine and phytosanitary regulations are essential to prevent the transboundary movement of this pest.
