Prococcus acutissimus is a species of soft scale insect belonging to the family Coccidae, order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that affects various perennial plants, specifically focusing on citrus and other subtropical ornamental or fruit-bearing crops by extracting essential sap.
The pest typically colonizes the undersides of leaves, along the midrib, and on tender green stems. By feeding on the plant's vascular system, it severely depletes the host's nutrient reserves, leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and in cases of severe infestation, the death of individual branches or young trees.
The biological cycle of this insect involves an egg stage, a highly mobile crawler stage, and a sedentary adult stage. The adult females are protected by a toughened, specialized covering that shields them from adverse environmental conditions and many contact pesticides, making timing of control measures critical.
Damage caused by this scale insect is twofold. First, direct damage occurs through the extraction of sap.
