Protaetia affinis

Protaetia affinis is a species of beetle belonging to the Cetoniinae subfamily within the Scarabaeidae family. Known as a flower chafer, this beetle is widely distributed in temperate regions and is often observed in orchards and gardens during the warmer months, feeding on floral parts and ripening fruits.

The beetle targets a variety of plants, primarily fruit trees like apple, pear, plum, and cherry. It also frequently attacks ornamental plants, including roses, peonies, and lilac. By feeding on the reproductive organs of flowers, the beetles can cause significant aesthetic and economic damage to both orchards and ornamental landscapes.

The life cycle of this species includes four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larvae develop in organic matter, such as compost heaps, decaying wood, or tree hollows, where they feed on decomposing plant materials. Unlike some other scarab larvae, they generally do not harm the roots of living plants, as they play a saprophagous role in the ecosystem.

Adult beetles are the primary cause of damage. They consume petals, stamens, and pistils, preventing proper fertilization and reducing fruit set. Furthermore, their feeding on young fruits and ripening produce creates wounds that can become entry points for secondary bacterial or fungal infections, leading to rot and further yield losses.

Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) techniques. Cultural control involves removing debris and potential breeding sites, such as old stumps and compost piles, from the immediate vicinity of sensitive trees. Mechanical control includes the manual collection of beetles in the early morning when they are sluggish, and the use of light or pheromone traps.

Chemical control should be avoided during the peak flowering period to ensure the safety of beneficial pollinators, such as honeybees. If infestations are severe, spot treatments with selective insecticides may be considered outside of flowering times, following local agricultural guidelines.
