The Celebes flower beetle (Protaetia celebica) is a species of scarab beetle belonging to the Cetoniinae subfamily. These insects are characterized by a robust body and a distinct metallic sheen on their elytra. While they are often considered part of the natural ecosystem, they can become significant pests when their populations rise in ornamental gardens and orchards.

Adult beetles are known to feed extensively on the reproductive parts of plants. They primarily target flowers, consuming petals, stamens, and pistils. This feeding behavior destroys the aesthetic value of decorative plants and prevents fruit set in fruit-bearing trees, as the damaged flowers are unable to be fertilized, leading to direct crop loss.

The biological development of this species involves a larval stage that typically occurs in soil rich in decomposing organic matter. Unlike the adults, the larvae usually serve as detritivores, breaking down organic waste. However, when the concentration of larvae is high in the root zones of plants, they may occasionally cause minor disturbance, though the primary threat remains the damage inflicted by the adults.

They fly efficiently from one plant to another, spreading their damage across large areas within a short timeframe. Gardeners often notice ragged, chewed petals and incomplete flower clusters as the primary evidence of an infestation during the blooming season.
