Systematic position: Protaetia fusca, commonly known as the Brown Flower Beetle, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This species is characterized by its robust build and mottled brownish-grey appearance, typical of the Cetoniinae subfamily, which allows it to thrive in various subtropical and temperate environments.

Host plants: The beetle is a generalist feeder that primarily targets floral parts. It causes significant damage to a wide range of ornamental plants, including roses, hibiscus, and chrysanthemums. In orchard settings, it may also feed on the flowers of various fruit-bearing trees, negatively impacting their development and fruit set.

Biology and lifecycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adults are most active during the warmer months, feeding on floral tissues. Females deposit eggs in decaying organic matter or nutrient-rich soil. The larvae, which are C-shaped grubs, live underground or in compost, feeding primarily on decomposing plant material before pupating and emerging as adult beetles.

Nature of damage and pest status: The primary harm is caused by the adult stage. The beetles graze on the petals, stamens, and pistils of flowers, causing ragged edges and preventing proper pollination. This feeding behavior ruins the aesthetic value of ornamental gardens and can lead to reduced fruit production in agricultural settings due to the destruction of reproductive plant structures.

Control measures: Management of Protaetia fusca requires an integrated approach to break its lifecycle. Key strategies include sanitation, such as removing decomposing vegetation where larvae might thrive. Physical control via manual collection of adults in the early morning is effective for small areas. For larger infestations, farmers can utilize light traps or apply registered selective insecticides during peak flight periods.
