Protaetia nox

Protaetia nox is a beetle species belonging to the family Scarabaeidae and the order Coleoptera. Recognized by its distinctive dark coloration, this insect is a significant concern for horticulturists due to its feeding habits. As a typical representative of the flower beetles, it is most active during warm, sunny days, targeting blossoming plants to feed on nectar and reproductive tissues.

The beetle primarily targets fruit-bearing trees, including apple, pear, and stone fruits like cherries and plums. In addition to commercial orchard crops, it frequently attacks various ornamental flowers and shrubs. Because the adult beetles congregate on the flowers to feed, their presence is easily detected during the peak bloom period of the plants they infest.

The life cycle of Protaetia nox spans several stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is predominantly spent in the soil or in decaying organic matter, where they feed on decomposing plant material, which makes them essentially harmless in the larval stage. However, the adult phase is the most damaging, emerging in spring just in time to capitalize on the flowering of orchard trees.

The direct damage caused by Protaetia nox is concentrated on the floral structures. Adult beetles consume the petals, stamens, and pistils, often causing enough damage to prevent pollination and fertilization entirely. In severe infestations, the sheer number of beetles can strip an entire tree of viable blossoms, leading to a total failure of the fruit set for the season.

Controlling this pest requires a strategic approach. It is advisable to integrate cultural practices with chemical control when necessary.

• Installing light traps or floral attractant traps to monitor and reduce populations.
• Applying targeted insecticide sprays only when absolutely necessary to protect bees and other pollinators.
