Fukayai scale

The Fukayai scale (Protopulvinaria fukayai) is a member of the Coccidae family, commonly referred to as soft scales. This pest is a significant threat to various agricultural and ornamental plants, particularly in warm, humid regions where these insects can thrive year-round or through multiple seasonal cycles.

This scale insect primarily targets citrus trees and tea bushes, though it is also found on a variety of ornamental species within the laurel and magnolia families. The insects typically congregate on the undersides of leaves, positioning themselves along the midrib where they can efficiently access the phloem for nutrient extraction.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, followed by the mobile crawler phase, and finally, the sedentary adult stage. The females develop a protective ovisac to shield their eggs, ensuring high survival rates. Their ability to reproduce quickly and spread via wind or contact with infested plants makes them a difficult pest to eradicate once established.

Damage is caused by the direct extraction of plant sap, leading to chlorosis, stunted growth, and premature leaf drop. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, a black fungal layer that severely inhibits photosynthesis, effectively starving the plant and reducing overall fruit quality and yield.

Management strategies for this pest include:

• Regular inspection of leaf undersides to detect initial infestations.
• Application of horticultural oils to smother the insects and eggs.
• Strategic use of systemic insecticides during the peak crawler activity period.
• Pruning and removal of heavily infested plant parts to reduce population density.
• Encouraging natural predators such as ladybirds and parasitic wasps.
