Long-valved soft scale

The Long-valved soft scale (Protopulvinaria longivalvata) is a notorious pest within the Coccidae family. These scale insects are known for their ability to thrive in tropical and subtropical environments, frequently infesting indoor plants, greenhouses, and orchard trees in warmer climates.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including various species of citrus, ficus, and ornamental shrubs. By attaching themselves to the undersides of leaves and stems, they create localized infestations that can quickly spread to adjacent plants if not controlled promptly.

The life cycle involves distinct stages, beginning with eggs laid by the stationary female under a specialized protective wax-like scale. Once the eggs hatch, the tiny mobile larvae, known as "crawlers," disperse across the plant to find suitable feeding sites where they settle and develop their protective armor, completing their maturation process.

Damage caused by this insect is twofold: direct nutrient depletion and indirect harm from sooty mold. As the scales feed, they excrete honeydew, a sticky substance that promotes the growth of black fungal colonies. This coating inhibits photosynthesis, which stunts the plant’s growth and significantly reduces its aesthetic and commercial value.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Chemical control using systemic insecticides is often necessary for severe infestations, but cultural practices are equally important. Quarantine of new plants and meticulous manual removal of scales help to keep populations at a manageable level, preventing widespread damage to indoor and outdoor collections.
