Systematic position. Protostrophus falsus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (weevils). This genus includes several species known as significant agricultural pests in regions with arid or semi-arid climates, where they can cause substantial yield losses in early crop development stages.

Affected crops. This species is a polyphagous pest, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. It poses a particularly high risk to major field crops such as maize, sunflower, sorghum, and various legumes. Young seedlings are the most susceptible to infestation, often leading to patchy stands.

Biology and life cycle. The adult weevils typically overwinter in the soil. Upon the arrival of warmer spring temperatures, they emerge to feed on developing foliage. The life cycle involves distinct stages where larvae develop underground, often feeding on root systems, while the adult stage is responsible for the visible damage to the above-ground parts of the plants.

Damage patterns and economic importance. Adult Protostrophus falsus feed by chewing the edges of leaves, which can result in severe defoliation of seedlings. In cases of high pest density, the plants may be completely destroyed shortly after emergence. Larval feeding on roots further weakens the plants, making them more susceptible to drought and other environmental stresses.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. The most effective strategy involves the use of systemic insecticide seed treatments, which provide long-lasting protection during the critical early growth phases. Additionally, agronomic practices such as deep autumn plowing to disturb overwintering sites and maintaining optimal crop rotation cycles are recommended to reduce population pressure.
