Description

The Camphor scale, scientifically known as Pseudaonidia duplex, is a destructive insect belonging to the family Diaspididae within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized globally as a significant pest that specializes in attacking the bark, leaves, and fruits of woody plants, causing considerable agricultural loss.

This pest has a broad host range, primarily affecting citrus species, as well as camphor trees, tea plants, camellias, and various ornamental species. Its ability to adapt to different host plants makes it a persistent challenge for orchard management and nursery production.

The life cycle of the Camphor scale involves egg, crawler, nymph, and adult stages. The adult female remains stationary under a protective, waxy scale, while the first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, are mobile and responsible for spreading the infestation to new parts of the host plant or to adjacent trees via wind.

The damage is caused by the insertion of the insect's piercing-sucking mouthparts into the plant tissues. This leads to chlorosis, leaf drop, stem dieback, and stunted plant growth. In severe cases, the vitality of the entire plant is compromised, making it susceptible to secondary pathogens and further stress.
