Peony scale

The peony scale (Pseudaonidia paeoniae) is a member of the Diaspididae family within the order Hemiptera. This pest is characterized by the presence of a hard, protective covering known as a scale or test, which shields the insect from environmental stress, predators, and standard contact insecticides, making it a challenging pest to manage in professional nurseries and home gardens.

The species primarily infests peony plants, but it also has a significant host range that includes various ornamental shrubs such as camellias and azaleas. The insects typically settle on stems, branches, and petioles, where they insert their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract sap, which compromises the nutrient transport within the host plant's vascular system.

The life cycle begins when eggs hatch into crawlers, the only mobile stage of the insect's life. These crawlers actively disperse to find suitable feeding sites on the host plant. Once a location is secured, they insert their stylets and begin to secrete a waxy substance that hardens into a protective shield, remaining stationary throughout the remainder of their development into adulthood.

Damage caused by the peony scale is often insidious, appearing as stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and branch dieback in severe cases. Furthermore, the presence of the scale insect often facilitates the growth of sooty mold, a fungus that thrives on the honeydew-like secretions, which further inhibits photosynthesis and detracts significantly from the plant's aesthetic value.

Management strategies for controlling this pest include:

• Strict quarantine and inspection of new plant material.
• Pruning and destruction of severely infested branches.
• Targeted application of systemic insecticides when crawlers are active.
• Use of horticultural oils to suffocate the insects under their shields.
• Encouraging natural biological controls such as predatory wasps and beetles.
