Trilobite scale

Pseudaonidia trilobitiformis

Description

The Trilobite scale (Pseudaonidia trilobitiformis) is a destructive insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, where it poses a constant threat to woody perennial plants.

This pest has a wide host range, including various citrus species, mangoes, coffee plants, and numerous ornamental plants. Because of its ability to thrive in greenhouse environments, it often causes significant damage to commercial nurseries and botanical collections, affecting the aesthetic and commercial value of the hosts.

The biology of this species is centered around the formation of a hard, protective armor or "scale." The adult female is sedentary, spending her entire life cycle anchored to the plant surface, extracting sap. The mobile larval stage, known as the "crawler," is the primary phase for dispersal, allowing the pest to colonize new parts of the plant or neighboring trees.

Damage is characterized by chlorosis, stunted growth, and leaf fall. As the insects feed, they secrete honeydew, which fosters the growth of sooty mold. This layer of mold blocks sunlight and gas exchange, severely weakening the plant's physiological condition and, in severe cases, leading to branch dieback or total plant collapse.

Effective management strategies against the Trilobite scale involve a combination of tactics:

  • Strict phytosanitary inspection of all incoming nursery stock to prevent infestation.
  • Application of horticultural oils to suffocate insects by blocking their respiratory pores.
  • Usage of systemic insecticides during the peak crawler emergence period.
  • Pruning and destruction of heavily infested plant parts to reduce the initial pest population.
  • Integration of biological control agents, specifically parasitic wasps and ladybird beetles, to manage populations sustainably.
