Description
Pseudaulacaspis cockerelli, widely known as the magnolia white scale or oleander scale, belongs to the family Diaspididae. It is a significant armored scale pest that thrives in warm climates and greenhouses, causing considerable damage to ornamental woody plants.
The pest has a very broad host range. It frequently infests trees and shrubs such as Magnolia, Michelia, Oleander, Ficus, various species of palms, and citrus trees. Because these plants are often used in landscaping or greenhouses, the pest can cause severe economic losses in the horticultural industry.
The biological cycle follows the typical development of armored scales: eggs, crawler (nymphal) stages, and adults. The female remains stationary under a protective, waxy white scale covering. The crawlers are the primary dispersal stage, emerging from under the female's shield to settle on new plant tissue, where they begin feeding and forming their own covers.
Damage is caused by the insertion of stylets into the plant tissues, extracting essential sap and nutrients. This feeding behavior leads to chlorosis, leaf yellowing, stunting of growth, and sometimes total defoliation. In heavy infestations, the accumulation of scales can cause significant branch dieback and weaken the structural integrity of the plant.
Management strategies require a combination of monitoring and intervention. Effective control methods include:
- Regular inspection of plant stems and undersides of leaves;
- Pruning and removing severely infested plant material;
- Using horticultural oils to smother the scales;
- Applying systemic insecticides when crawlers are most active to ensure optimal efficacy.
