Pseudaulacaspis rubra is a species within the Diaspididae family (Armored scale insects), order Hemiptera. These insects are significant pests that cause damage by sucking sap from various host plants. As specialized plant parasites, they are highly adapted to surviving on the bark and foliage of woody hosts by forming protective structures that shield them from environmental factors.

The host range for this pest includes a variety of fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, and forest species. The insects prefer to colonize the stems and branches of their hosts, where they can feed undisturbed. Because of their ability to camouflage with the bark, infestations are often unnoticed until significant damage to the plant's health has already occurred.

The biological cycle consists of several stages, beginning with eggs laid beneath the female's scale. Upon hatching, the "crawlers" or first-instar nymphs emerge. This is the only mobile stage, during which they disperse to new parts of the plant or move to adjacent trees via wind or physical contact, subsequently settling down to begin feeding and developing their permanent armor.

Damage is primarily physiological, caused by the continuous removal of plant sap. This results in chlorosis, stunted growth, limb dieback, and in severe cases, the death of the entire plant. Furthermore, the feeding process can cause cracks in the bark, creating entry points for secondary infections by pathogens like fungi and bacteria.

Effective management and control strategies include:

• Conducting routine visual inspections of branches and trunks for signs of infestation.
• Pruning and removing infested branches to reduce local population pressure.
• Applying targeted insecticides during the crawler stage when they are most vulnerable.
• Utilizing horticultural oils during the dormant season to suffocate overwintering populations.
