Description
Systematic position. The Concinnus engraver beetle (Pseudips concinnus) is a member of the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is recognized as a significant pest of coniferous trees, particularly prevalent in forest ecosystems where it plays a destructive role in tree mortality.
Host plants and damage symptoms. This insect primarily infests spruce and fir species. The beetles burrow into the inner bark, creating complex gallery systems that interrupt the flow of nutrients and water within the tree. Symptoms include thinning crowns, discoloration of needles, and the presence of boring dust at the base of the tree trunk.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Pseudips concinnus is highly dependent on ambient temperature. Adult beetles penetrate the bark to lay eggs in galleries. The emerging larvae feed on the cambium layer. Depending on the climate and regional conditions, the beetle may complete one or more generations per growing season.
