Description

The Monterey pine engraver (Pseudips radiatae) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. This beetle is a significant pest of coniferous trees, primarily targeting various pine species, and is known for its ability to cause severe damage to pine stands globally.

The insect primarily infests Pinus radiata and other related pine species. While it naturally favors stressed or fallen timber, a major infestation can escalate to healthy trees. The beetles use chemical signals, specifically pheromones, to attract large numbers of individuals to a single host tree to overcome its natural defenses.

The life cycle begins when adult beetles bore into the bark, constructing galleries where eggs are laid. The larval stage is particularly destructive, as the larvae feed on the phloem and cambium layer. This feeding activity disrupts the flow of water and nutrients, which ultimately results in the death of the tree.

The damage caused by Pseudips radiatae is often indicated by the presence of boring dust (frass) on the bark surface and the characteristic star-shaped or linear gallery patterns found under the bark.
