Bowrey's scale

Bowrey's scale (Pseudischnaspis bowreyi) is a member of the Diaspididae family within the order Hemiptera. This pest is a serious polyphagous insect that infests a wide range of tropical and subtropical plants, including citrus, avocados, mangoes, and ornamental species. It is particularly problematic in greenhouses and nursery environments where it can build up large, persistent populations.

The biology of this species is defined by the development of a tough, protective scale cover, which makes it highly resistant to many contact insecticides. The life cycle consists of the egg stage, the mobile crawler (first instar) stage, and the sessile adult stage. Once the crawlers find a suitable feeding site on the plant, they settle permanently, insert their stylets into the plant tissue, and secrete the characteristic protective wax.

Damage caused by Bowrey's scale results from the direct removal of plant sap and the injection of toxins during feeding. Infested leaves exhibit chlorosis, curling, and eventually necrosis. On fruit and stems, the insects cause unsightly spotting and bark deformation. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew often encourages the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and interferes with the plant's essential physiological processes.

The economic impact of Bowrey's scale is significant, particularly in orchards and ornamental production. Heavy infestations lead to reduced plant vigor, stunted development, and loss of commercial value for harvested produce. If left untreated, the cumulative stress on the plant can result in severe dieback, reduced yield potential, and premature plant death, making timely intervention crucial for growers.

Control measures and integrated pest management (IPM) practices:
