Description
Pseudocleonus is a genus of weevils (family Curculionidae) within the order Coleoptera. These insects are recognized as significant pests in various agricultural regions, particularly where root crops are cultivated on a large scale, as they demonstrate high adaptability to specific agro-climatic conditions.
The primary host plants for Pseudocleonus are members of the Amaranthaceae family, specifically sugar beet and table beet. In addition to cultivated fields, these weevils utilize common weeds, including various species of Chenopodium, as alternative food sources during periods when primary crops are unavailable.
The biological development of this pest typically spans one or two years, depending on the environment. Adults overwinter in the soil or under debris, emerging in early spring to initiate mating and oviposition. The larvae, which hatch from eggs laid near the plant roots, are the primary life stage responsible for soil-borne damage.
Damage caused by Pseudocleonus is twofold: adult weevils feed on the foliage of seedlings, potentially causing complete plant loss, while larvae feed directly on the root system.
