Japanese broad-nosed weevil

The Japanese broad-nosed weevil (Pseudocneorhinus bifasciatus) is a destructive insect belonging to the family Curculionidae within the order Coleoptera. Originally native to East Asia, this beetle has become a significant concern for horticulturists and nursery managers globally due to its adaptability to various temperate climates.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast array of plant hosts. It is particularly notorious for damaging ornamental shrubs such as azaleas, rhododendrons, and hydrangeas, as well as various fruit-bearing trees like apples, pears, and plums. The broad range of hosts makes it difficult to manage in diverse landscapes.

The life cycle of the weevil involves subterranean larval development and above-ground adult feeding. Larvae typically consume fine root tissues in the soil, while the nocturnal adults feed on the margins of leaves. This dual-feeding habit allows the insect to negatively impact plant vitality from both the root system and the canopy simultaneously.

Damage caused by the adult weevil is diagnostic: they create semi-circular notches along the leaf edges, often referred to as "shingled" or "scalloped" edges. While healthy established plants can often tolerate some foliage loss, severe infestations can lead to stunted growth, reduced flowering, and, in young nursery stock, potential plant mortality due to cumulative stress.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach to maintain plant health:

• Hand-picking adults at night when they are most active on the foliage.
• Applying granular insecticides or soil drenches to target the larval stage in the root zone.
• Using foliar sprays containing contact insecticides during peak adult activity periods.
• Maintaining healthy soil conditions and sanitation to discourage pest colonization.
• Monitoring new plant introductions to prevent the accidental spread of the weevil into new areas.
