Description
Systematic position. The Fir root bark beetle (Pseudohylesinus grandis) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, specifically within the subfamily Scolytinae. As a specialized wood-boring insect, it occupies a significant niche in forest ecosystems, primarily within the Pacific Northwest region, where it interacts with various coniferous hosts.
Crops damaged. This pest primarily targets various species of fir (Abies), with Abies grandis being a favored host. While it prefers firs, it is known to infest other conifers, including spruce (Picea) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). Infestations often occur in trees that are already under physiological stress, making them susceptible to colonization by bark beetles.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves adult beetles boring into the bark to construct egg galleries. Eggs are deposited along the walls of these galleries. Upon hatching, larvae feed on the phloem and cambium layer, creating distinct galleries that can girdle the tree trunk. After pupation, the new generation of adults emerges through exit holes and often feeds on the succulent tissue of new shoots before mating and seeking a new host.

Symptoms of infestation include chlorosis (yellowing of needles), thinning of the canopy, and eventually the death of the tree.
