Description
The Douglas-fir beetle (Pseudohylesinus nebulosus), also known as the Pacific coast wire-worm beetle or small bark beetle, is a wood-boring insect belonging to the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. It is recognized as a significant pest in western North America, affecting the health of various coniferous species.
The primary hosts of this pest include the Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and several species of true firs (Abies). While they typically colonize downed, stressed, or weakened trees, they can reach outbreak levels that allow them to successfully attack healthy, vigorous trees in forest stands.
Regarding their biology, these beetles typically complete one generation per year. Adult beetles overwinter under the bark of host trees or within the protective layer of forest litter. As temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles emerge to seek out suitable hosts, where they excavate galleries in the inner bark to lay their eggs.
The damage caused by Pseudohylesinus nebulosus occurs when larvae create galleries that girdle the tree, effectively disrupting the flow of water and nutrients. The visible impact is the yellowing of the foliage, crown discoloration, and eventually the death of the tree if the infestation is severe enough.
