The Sitka spruce beetle (Pseudohylesinus sitchensis) is a member of the Curculionidae family, specifically belonging to the Scolytinae subfamily. This beetle is a specialized forest pest known for infesting coniferous trees, particularly in the coastal regions of North America.
The primary host for this beetle is the Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis), which is highly valued for its timber. While these beetles often seek out stressed, wind-thrown, or diseased trees, high population densities can lead to attacks on healthy, vigorous specimens, causing significant economic loss to forestry industries.
The biological cycle involves adult beetles boring through the bark to reach the cambium layer. Females create egg galleries where they deposit their eggs.
