Pseudoparlatoria ostreata, commonly known as the oyster-shaped scale, belongs to the family Diaspididae within the order Hemiptera. This pest is recognized for its distinctive shield that resembles an oyster shell, providing robust protection against environmental factors and many standard contact pesticides.

The host range of this insect is extensive, targeting various subtropical and tropical plants. Significant infestations are frequently observed on avocados, citrus trees, mangoes, and diverse ornamental greenhouse species. Its ability to thrive in indoor environments makes it a specific concern for plant nurseries and international trade of botanical specimens.

The biology of Pseudoparlatoria ostreata involves a specific lifecycle where adult females remain sedentary under their scales for their entire adult life. Reproduction occurs throughout the warmer seasons, with the mobile first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, being the primary stage responsible for local dispersal and infestation of new host tissue.

Damage is caused by the insertion of stylets into plant tissues to feed on cell sap. This feeding process results in chlorosis, localized leaf distortion, and premature necrosis. Heavy infestations can lead to significant physiological stress, reduced vigor, and stunted growth of the host plant, rendering fruits unmarketable and foliage unsightly.
