Pseudoparlatoria parlatorioides

Systematic position. Pseudoparlatoria parlatorioides is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae (armored scale insects). These insects are recognized by their small size and the characteristic hard, protective cover they construct over their bodies, which serves as a shield against environmental stressors and pesticides.

Host range. This pest is a polyphagous insect that attacks a wide variety of ornamental and tropical plants. Primary hosts include fruit trees, specifically citrus species, as well as a diverse range of ornamental foliage plants such as palms, orchids, and ficus varieties, often causing significant problems in greenhouse environments.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises the egg stage, the mobile crawler (nymph) stage, and the sedentary adult stage. Crawlers are the primary means of dispersal; once they locate a suitable feeding site, they settle, insert their mouthparts into the plant tissue, and secrete a protective scale. Multiple generations can occur annually under greenhouse conditions.

Damage and economic significance. Pseudoparlatoria parlatorioides feeds by sucking sap from plant tissues, including leaves, stems, and fruits. Heavy infestations cause yellowing, leaf drop, stunted growth, and dieback of branches. The presence of these scales significantly diminishes the aesthetic quality of ornamental plants and can reduce crop yields in productive orchards.

Management strategies. Effective control requires an integrated approach:

• Strict nursery hygiene and inspection of incoming plant materials.
• Application of systemic insecticides specifically targeting the crawler stages.
• Use of horticultural oils to suffocate the scales under their protective covers.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce local population pressure.
• Implementing regular monitoring programs to detect early stages of infestation.
