The oak bark beetle (Pseudopityophthorus pruinosus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. This small insect is primarily known for attacking various species of the genus Quercus. It plays a significant role in forest ecosystems, often acting as a secondary pest that exploits trees already compromised by environmental or biological factors.

The beetle typically infests weakened, dying, or recently cut oak trees. It prefers areas with thinner bark, such as branches and the upper parts of the main trunk. Drought, root diseases, or defoliation by other insects make trees particularly susceptible to colonization, as these conditions reduce the tree's natural resistance and ability to produce defensive resins.

The life cycle involves adult beetles boring into the bark to create egg galleries. After hatching, the larvae mine tunnels perpendicular to the main gallery, feeding on the inner bark. The completion of the life cycle depends heavily on temperature and climate, with the beetle often producing multiple generations per year in warmer regions, allowing populations to grow rapidly in favorable conditions.
