Description
Systematic position: The oak bark beetle (Pseudopityophthorus pubipennis) is a member of the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. This insect is a specialized borer that plays a significant role in the degradation of oak wood in its native range.
Host plants: The primary hosts for this species are various oak species (Quercus spp.). It thrives on stressed, injured, or recently fallen trees, but can also colonize healthy trees when the local population density reaches high levels, causing significant distress to the host plant.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults bore through the bark to construct nuptial chambers and galleries. Females lay eggs along these galleries, and larvae subsequently tunnel through the inner bark and cambium layer. Depending on temperature and moisture, there may be one or more generations per year.
Character of damage and economic importance: The larval galleries disrupt the flow of sap and nutrients within the tree's phloem. This often leads to crown dieback, thinning foliage, and if the infestation is severe enough, the total mortality of the tree. The presence of the pest is often signaled by tiny emergence holes and fine wood dust on the surface of the bark.
