Pseudotheraptus

Pseudotheraptus is a genus of insect pests belonging to the family Coreidae, order Hemiptera. The most economically significant species in this genus is Pseudotheraptus wayi, which is widely recognized for its destructive impact on tropical agriculture, particularly affecting coconut palm plantations, cocoa, and various fruit-bearing trees in East Africa and the islands of the Indian Ocean.

Taxonomically classified within the Coreidae family, these insects are specialized plant feeders. Both adults and nymphs rely on sucking plant sap for nutrition. Their development is highly responsive to tropical climates, where constant warmth and moisture allow for overlapping generations and rapid population growth throughout the year.

The primary host for this pest is the coconut palm, though it also infests cocoa, coffee, mango, guava, and certain legumes. By using their piercing-sucking mouthparts, these bugs penetrate the epidermis of young fruits and shoots. The injection of saliva containing enzymes causes local cell death, leading to dark necrotic lesions, fruit deformation, and eventually premature abscission.

The damage caused by Pseudotheraptus is most notably associated with the phenomenon known as "coreid nutfall," where young coconuts drop en masse, leading to severe yield reductions. If left unchecked, infestations can jeopardize the economic viability of entire plantations, as the damage is often irreversible once the fruit has been stung during its critical early developmental stage.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are recommended to mitigate the impact of this pest:

• Biological control through the utilization of weaver ants (Oecophylla longinoda), which serve as effective natural predators.
• Strategic application of targeted systemic or contact insecticides during peak infestation periods.
• Continuous monitoring and surveillance using pheromone traps to trigger timely intervention.
