Description

Taxonomic position. The coconut bug is classified within the order Hemiptera and the family Coreidae. It is recognized as a major economic pest, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where it causes significant disruption to industrial plantations.

Affected crops. The pest shows a strong preference for perennial crops, most notably coconut palms, cocoa, coffee, and mango trees. It is also known to infest various leguminous species, making it a highly polyphagous insect that survives on a diverse range of agricultural hosts throughout the year.

Biology and life cycle. The lifecycle comprises egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Females typically oviposit on young, tender plant parts. Development is continuous in tropical regions, with temperature and food availability acting as the primary drivers of population growth and reproductive speed.

Damage and economic impact. Both adults and nymphs cause damage by using their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on developing fruit, flowers, and stems. The injection of toxic saliva into the plant tissues induces lesions, fruit abortion, and severe malformation, which renders the produce commercially unviable.
