Description
Systematic position: Pseudotheraptus wayi is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Coreidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive agricultural pests in tropical regions, particularly in East Africa, due to its specialized feeding habits on economically important crops.
Affected crops: The primary host is the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), but the bug is highly polyphagous. It frequently attacks cocoa, cashew nuts, mangoes, citrus, and various legumes. The wide range of host plants makes it a persistent challenge for commercial tropical agriculture.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The insects prefer feeding on young, tender tissues of the host plants. In tropical climates, breeding occurs continuously throughout the year, allowing for rapid population growth and multiple generations annually.
Nature of damage: Both adults and nymphs damage plants by piercing young nuts, buds, and shoots with their mouthparts. Saliva injected during feeding contains toxic enzymes that cause necrosis, leading to characteristic pitting, cracking, and premature abscission (dropping) of developing fruits.
Control measures: Management of Pseudotheraptus wayi requires integrated pest management strategies.
