Description

The Elm bark beetle (Pteleobius) belongs to the Curculionidae family, specifically the Scolytinae subfamily. These small beetles are specialized xylophages that focus their destructive activity almost exclusively on elm species, playing a significant role in the degradation of urban and forest elm populations.

The primary hosts for this pest include the European white elm and the Wych elm. While they predominantly target trees already stressed by drought, fungal pathogens, or urban pollution, healthy trees are not immune, especially during outbreaks where large populations of beetles can overwhelm a healthy host's defenses.

The life cycle involves the adult beetle boring through the bark to reach the cambium layer. The female creates a longitudinal maternal gallery where she deposits eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae construct transverse tunnels as they feed on the inner bark, which effectively girdles the tree and interrupts the vital flow of water and nutrients.

Damage symptoms are characterized by the appearance of numerous exit holes on the bark surface. Inside, the galleries form a distinct pattern that cuts off the conductive tissues. This leads to symptoms such as leaf wilting, crown thinning, and eventually the death of the tree, which can occur within a few seasons if the infestation is severe.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest control. Key steps include the immediate removal of infested timber to prevent the spread of the next generation. Applying contact insecticides to the bark during the adult flight period can reduce populations. Furthermore, maintaining tree vigor through irrigation and fertilization is essential to discourage beetle attacks.
