Kraatz's elm bark beetle

Kraatz's elm bark beetle (Pteleobius kraatzi) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). This species is a significant pest of elm trees (Ulmus spp.), acting as a secondary wood-borer that targets physiologically stressed or declining trees.

The beetle primarily attacks various species within the Ulmus genus. It is attracted to freshly cut wood, wind-damaged trees, or those suffering from drought and disease, making it a common inhabitant in managed forest stands and urban landscaping that lack proper maintenance.

The biology of Pteleobius kraatzi involves mating and gallery construction beneath the bark. Females excavate longitudinal or irregular maternal galleries, depositing eggs along the sides. Larvae then feed on the phloem and cambium layers, creating intricate patterns of larval tunnels that eventually lead to the destruction of the tree's vascular system.

Infestation is often detected by the appearance of exit holes and fine bark dust (frass) on the surface of the trunk. As the population grows, the cumulative effect of larval feeding disrupts nutrient transport, leading to crown dieback, yellowing of leaves, and eventual tree mortality if the infestation is heavy.

Management strategies focus on silvicultural and chemical interventions. Regular inspection of elm populations is crucial to identify infested individuals early. Effective control methods include:

• Sanitary logging and destruction of infested branches or trunks to stop the beetle's life cycle.
• Application of contact insecticides during the peak flight period to prevent colonization.
