Description
The elm bark beetle (Pteleobius vittatus) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the Curculionidae family, specifically the Scolytinae subfamily. As its name suggests, it primarily targets trees within the Ulmus genus, acting as a significant pest in both urban landscapes and natural forests.
The biological cycle of Pteleobius vittatus involves the beetle overwintering beneath the bark of infested trees, either as larvae or young adults. During the spring, adults emerge and seek out suitable host trees. They are particularly attracted to trees that are already stressed by drought, poor soil conditions, or previous disease infections.
The damage is caused primarily by the larvae, which tunnel into the phloem and cambium layers. These galleries disrupt the flow of nutrients throughout the tree, leading to yellowing of leaves, premature leaf fall, and eventually the death of the affected tree section or the entire plant.
The destructive impact is amplified by the beetle's ability to facilitate the entry of fungal pathogens into the vascular system of the elm tree. This secondary damage often proves fatal, making early detection and rapid management actions essential for the survival of the tree population.
