The genus Pterophorus belongs to the family Pterophoridae, known as plume moths, within the order Lepidoptera. These insects are distinguished by their uniquely modified wings, which are deeply cleft into narrow, feather-like plumes. When at rest, they typically hold their wings outstretched at a right angle to the body, giving them a distinct T-shape appearance.

This pest affects a variety of plants, primarily within the Asteraceae and Convolvulaceae families. Many species are known to feed on ornamental flowers, herbs, and certain vegetable crops. Larvae are highly specialized and often feed in concealed locations, making early detection a significant challenge for growers and farmers alike.

The life cycle of the plume moth follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are usually laid on the underside of leaves or near flower buds. Upon hatching, the larvae begin to feed, often burrowing into stems or flower heads. They usually overwinter as pupae or adults tucked away in debris, soil, or crevices of host plants.

Furthermore, the larval feeding sites frequently become entry points for secondary infections like fungal rots, further degrading the health of the plant.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural controls, such as cleaning up plant debris and removing weeds that serve as alternative hosts, are essential. When chemical intervention is necessary, insecticides should be applied when young larvae are active and exposed. Monitoring adult flights with pheromone or light traps helps in timing applications for maximum efficiency.
