Description
The maple cottony scale (Pulvinaria acericola) is a significant pest belonging to the Coccidae family. It specifically targets maple trees, utilizing its piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract sap. This species is widely recognized for the distinct white, cotton-like ovisacs produced by adult females during the breeding season.
These insects primarily infest the underside of leaves, leaf petioles, and occasionally young succulent twigs. By feeding continuously, they deplete the tree's nutritional reserves, which is especially detrimental during the spring and early summer periods when the host plant is actively growing and expanding its foliage.
The life cycle involves a single generation per year. Second-instar nymphs overwinter in the rough bark of the host tree. As temperatures rise in spring, they migrate to the foliage. After mating, the females grow rapidly and secrete the conspicuous white waxy egg sacs that contain hundreds to thousands of eggs, which hatch into crawlers.
Damage caused by this pest includes chlorosis, leaf curl, and premature leaf drop. The secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the leaves and branches. This black coating inhibits photosynthesis, further weakening the tree and making it susceptible to other environmental stresses and secondary diseases.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Monitoring for crawler emergence is critical for the timing of chemical interventions. Systemic insecticides are generally the most effective way to eliminate the pest after it has established itself on the foliage. Pruning heavily infested branches can also reduce the overall population pressure within an individual tree canopy.
