Cacao pulvinaria

The cacao pulvinaria (Pulvinaria cacao) is a scale insect belonging to the family Coccidae in the order Hemiptera. This pest is a significant threat to tropical agriculture, specifically targeting cacao plantations and other related botanical species within its native range.

The primary host for this insect is the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). It thrives in warm, humid tropical environments, where it colonizes young stems, twigs, and the undersides of leaves, utilizing its piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract sap directly from the plant’s vascular system.

The biology of Pulvinaria cacao is defined by the production of a distinct white, cottony ovisac secreted by the female to protect her eggs. After hatching, the mobile first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, move across the host plant to find suitable feeding sites, where they eventually settle and complete their development into sessile adults.

The damage caused by this pest is twofold. Direct damage occurs through sap depletion, which stunts growth and reduces plant vigor. Indirect damage is caused by the secretion of honeydew, which fosters the growth of sooty mold, blocking sunlight from the leaf surface and inhibiting photosynthesis, eventually leading to yield losses.

Recommended strategies for control and management include:

• Regular field scouting to detect early infestations and immediate pruning of heavily infested branches.
• Biological control measures, such as introducing or preserving natural predators like ladybird beetles and parasitoid wasps.
• The application of horticultural or mineral oils, which act as suffocants to manage populations without leaving harsh residues.
• Targeted chemical applications specifically timed to the crawler stage, which is the most vulnerable point in the life cycle.
