Host plants: This pest shows a strong preference for members of the Myrtaceae family. It is frequently reported on Eugenia and Syzygium species, as well as various ornamental shrubs grown in indoor gardens, greenhouses, and nurseries. Occasionally, it may infest citrus and other broad-leaved evergreens.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg, mobile crawler stage, and the sedentary adult phase. Females settle on stems or leaf undersides, secreting a waxy ovisac that contains hundreds of eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the tiny crawlers disperse across the plant host to establish new feeding sites before settling down and developing their protective waxy layer.
Damage and pest status: As a sap-sucking insect, it drains plant nutrients, leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and potential leaf drop. A significant concern is the excretion of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold growth. This dark fungal layer not only ruins the plant aesthetics but also interferes with the plant’s ability to photosynthesize properly.
