The yellow cottony scale (Pulvinaria flavescens) is a significant pest belonging to the Coccidae family. These insects are well-known for the distinctive white, cotton-like ovisacs produced by females, which protect their eggs. Because they are stationary for most of their lives, they are often overlooked until the plant shows visible symptoms of stress.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including citrus species, grapevines, and various ornamental greenhouse plants. They typically congregate on the undersides of leaves, along leaf veins, and on young, succulent twigs, where they feed by piercing plant tissues with their mouthparts and sucking sap.

The life cycle of Pulvinaria flavescens involves distinct developmental stages: egg, crawler, nymph, and adult. The "crawler" stage is the only mobile phase, during which the larvae disperse to new feeding sites. Populations tend to explode in warm, stable climates, making it a persistent challenge for growers in Mediterranean and subtropical zones.

The primary damage is caused by the extraction of vital plant fluids and the excretion of honeydew. This sticky substance serves as an ideal medium for sooty mold growth, which covers leaves in a dark layer. This mold layer blocks sunlight, severely hindering photosynthesis, weakening the plant, and reducing overall yields or aesthetic value.

Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to keep populations below economic damage thresholds. Key actions include:

• Frequent monitoring of foliage to catch infestations during the early crawler stage.
• Use of horticultural oils to suffocate insects and dissolve the waxy protective layer of the egg sacs.
• Application of systemic insecticides when populations are high to ensure thorough coverage.
• Promotion of natural predators such as lady beetles (Coccinellidae) and parasitic wasps.
• Proper sanitation practices, including pruning and disposing of heavily infested plant materials.
