Ice plant scale

The Ice plant scale (Pulvinaria mesembryanthemi) is a sap-sucking insect belonging to the family Coccidae. It is a significant pest known primarily for infesting plants in the Aizoaceae family, often causing severe physiological stress to these succulent species.

Host plants typically include various species of Mesembryanthemum and related succulents grown in gardens or greenhouses. Due to its cryptic nature and ability to mimic plant structures, this pest often goes unnoticed until a significant infestation has already been established within a plant population.

The life cycle is characterized by the development of distinctive white, cottony ovisacs (egg sacs) produced by females. The nymphs, commonly referred to as crawlers, are the most mobile stage, responsible for spreading the infestation to new growth or adjacent plants before settling down to feed.

Damage is caused by the extraction of phloem sap, leading to stunted growth, leaf yellowing, and general lack of vigor. A major secondary effect is the production of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, further interfering with photosynthesis and reducing the aesthetic value of the plant.
